On 25th of June 2010 the final Symposium of PARSE.Insight took place with participants from various stakeholders in research. Presented were the major insights gained in the preservation of research output in Europe as well as the next steps to take to come to a better ecology of data preservation and re-use. Ten major insights were identified, amongst these major gaps between different countries in how to deal with research data and researchers' reluctance to share their data while they certainly want others' data. These findings were enforced by the outcomes of three case studies: High-Energy Physics, Earth Observation and Social Sciences and Humanities. Based on these findings and our ideas for the development of a science data infrastructure in Europe, the final roadmap of PARSE.Insight has been presented and published. Aside from technical aspects this also addresses organisational as well as social aspects such as incentives for researchers to increase their willingness to share their data. Furthermore, the gap analysis tool was presented which helps finding weak spots and contradictions in stakeholder communities and the Interactive Map showing who is active in preservation in Europe. Finally, PARSE.Insight's supportive work on defining an audit and certification standard has been explained. More information about the symposium can be found at the event's page
The second day, 26th of June 2010, PARSE.Insight had its final official review conducted by the EC. Overall, the results of the project were very much appreciated and do fulfill the expectations raised at the beginning of the project. Finding such as "people seem to think that dealing with open access solves digital preservation" were mentioned by one of the reviewers as a real eye-opener. Also, many researchers still keep their data on their local discs which is far from ideal. These and other findings were found very important. As all reports have been delivered succesfully, it is now time to tell the world about it. PARSE.Insight received various recommendations for wider dissemination of results and we will follow on to that. A summary of the review report is expected soon.
The European Union, as well as many national funding bodies, are creating infrastructures to support European research in particular and European development in general. Many of the building blocks are in place or are close to full scale deployment. PARSE.Insight is an EU-funded project which is helping to develop the policy to determine the next steps in the areas of preservation, access and re-use of scientific (in the broadest sense) data.
We are therefore pleased to invite you to the symposium PARSE.Insight - carrying the flame forward. The aim of the symposium is to review the results of our extensive, world-wide, surveys and case studies, as well as the updated Roadmap, but more importantly we wish to map out, with your help, what comes next. After publishing the survey results end of last year, PARSE.Insight has now released the statistics in a graphical online format. Each graph in the survey report is also available online and can be referenced or even embedded in your own research. Check out the graphs on Swivel.com.
PARSE.Insight has published their results of several surveys undertaken to enlight the current state of affair of digital preservation in research. The surveys were targeted to three main stakeholders in science: researchers, data managers and publishers. These results are now wrapped up in a report and gives an in-depth view on preservation of research data. Furthermore, a cross analysis has been done amongst the stakeholders. The report is now available: download survey report.
Later on, the graphs that were used in this report will become available separately as well.
PARSE.Insight has published the first insights into preservation of research data. In the past months various surveys have been undertaken to enlight the current state of affair of digital preservation in research. Furthermore, three case studies are performed focussing on High Energy Physics (HEP), Earth Observarion (EO) and Social Sciences & Humanities (SSH). Although research in these cases is still going on, the first results, together with the highlights of the surveys can be found in this interim report.
On June 2, 2009 PARSE.Insight had its first annual review by reviewers of the European Commission in Brussels. The project showed good progress, and the reviewers were pleased with the first year's goals and achievements. For a summary of project's results of the first year click here.
PARSE.Insight has just published its first newsletter. It summarizes the results of the project's first year. The Newsletter is available here.

PARSE.insight will be present at the following upcoming conference:
The 5th International Conference on e-Social Science of the National Centre for e-Social Science (NCeSS) will be held on 24-26 June 2009 in Cologne (Germany) in collaboration with the German Social Science Infrastructure Services (GESIS). PARSE.Insight will be there as well and will present some first results of its case study in Psycholinguistics in a poster about data sharing.
The LIBER 38th Annual General Conference will take place in Toulouse (France) on 30 June-3 July 2009. PARSE.Insight will be there as well and will present some first results of its general survey. The poster about the insight survey will be displayed on 2 and 3 July.
On June, 2 2009 PARSE.insight will have its first annual review by reviewers of the European Commission in Brussels. Looking back on the past year, the project showed good progress in defining a draft roadmap for building the e-Science infrastructure in European. Furthermore, an extensive survey is in progress for identifying Europe's current position on digital preservation regarding research. Also, specifications have been defined for performing a gap analysis between the roadmap and the current state of affair and development of standards on which an audit and certification process for digital repositories can be based. For a summary of the first year's goals and achievements, click here.
In coming months, PARSE.insight will be present at various occasions across Europe. To start with, PARSE.insight will present a poster and leaflets at the The XXXII. Librarian Meeting for the members of the Max Planck Society will take place on 4-6 May in Garching near Munich (Germany). On 2-5 June 2009, PARSE.Insight will present some first results of one of its case studies with a speech about open data in the Psycholinguistics at the 98th German Librarian Day (All presentations are in German only).
To continue, nestor, a network of expertise in long-term preservation and long-term availability of digital resources, will have its closing event on 10 June 2009 in Berlin (Germany). PARSE.insight will be there as well and will present an outline of its motivations and objectives in a poster and a leaflet.
In January 2009, PARSE.Insight presented the High-Energy Physics (HEP) survey on data preservation, re-use and (open) access performed by CERN at the "Workshop on Data Preservation and Long Term Analysis in HEP (Open Access and Long Term Collaborative Governance)" in Hamburg (Germany). The presentation can be downloaded here.
On 27 of January 2009, a workshop will be held for experts dealing with funding of long-term preservation of scientific data.
